I MUST be a masochist.....

Looking over many of the things in my life, I've come to the conclusion that I must be a masochist of some pretty tall order.

I mean, let's look at the facts:

I despise people, but I work in Customer Service (Though I think the latter LEADS to the former)

I hate crowds, but I freelance at Airshows and Auto Shows, where I have to wade through literally hundreds of thousands of people on a weekend.

I'm afraid of heights, but go flying and always visit the tallest skyscrapers whenever in a real city.

I don't care a whit about money, I love content and depth.......and I live in a state based upon materialism and appearances.

The kind of woman I'm attracted to is NEVER good for me.

Stupid people are my Kryptonite. Have you SEEN the world we live in???

I am blunt, honest, and outspoken. And am always surrounded by people that expect me to lie to them and be subtle.

I believe in treating people with courtesy. Again, I live in THIS country.

I possibly romanticize the time I spent in Europe, but I long to be there....and I live in FLORIDA, the opposite of everything those times and that place meant to me.

Then again, maybe I just face my fears head on on purpose. Yeah, yeah, THAT sounds better.
You've got it, I can't sleep, again, so the brain's running. That, and I'm stuck on a story and trying a different track to distract myself.

So what about you guys, what kinds of things like this do you notice about yourself?

Sunday will show all

Ok, You ALL know I'm a lifelong Broncos fan. (Well, thereabouts. I was like 5 when I started rooting for them, so...lol).

You also know I never miss a game on TV (or, if possible, in person) if I can at all help it.

You also all know that I like Tim Tebow as an athlete and as a locker-room presence for the team. (No, I am not and will NEVER get into the religion aspect of the man. Faith/Belief?spirituality/religion are private things not to be aired in public, in my opinion. I don't even joke about that....exe with Fritz...'cause he starts it :P)

So, you know how I feel about him as a QB.

I'm not going to gripe about the media circus, though...well...I've done enough about that.

But, come Sunday versus The New England Patriots (thanks to my family, my second team), we will really see what kind of a TEAM we have in the Denver Broncos.

I've been watching a lot of the Pats the past few weeks. Their pass Defense has more holes than a volleyball net. We should be able to pass on them with impunity.

Oh. Right.

We ALL know Brady likes to chuck it for yardage, and, if he racks up three touchdowns against us in the first 3 quarters, we're gonna be hosed. (Our biggest come from behind win was one Steve and I were in the house for, the 15pt 5min comeback against Miami).

Honestly, no matter WHO we've had behind center, my beloved Broncos have been in TOO MANY close games. Wih the exeption of three (The Orton loss to GB, the Tebow loss to DET and the win over OAK), every game this season has been decided by less than a touchdown.

Yup, we could be 10-2 right now. Or 1-11. And when did we start winning???

EEEHHHHH. Wrong.

When the DEFENSE stepped up. Credit where credit is due, people. Orton OR Tebow, when our defense plays badly, we get killed. (Need I remind everyone, Kyle Orton went 6-0 his first six games for Denver as well)

Scores thus far:

Week 01

Oakland Raiders

Loss: 23 - 20

Week 02

Cincinnati Bengals

Win: 24 - 22

Week 03

@ Tennessee Titans

Loss: 17 - 14

Week 04

@ Green Bay Packers

Loss: 49 - 23

Week 05

San Diego Chargers

Loss: 29 - 24

Week 06

Bye

Tebow Replaces Orton as Starter

Week 07

@ Miami Dolphins

Win: 18 - 15

Week 08

Detroit Lions

Loss: 45 - 10

Week 09

@ Oakland Raiders

Win: 38 - 24

Week 10

@ Kansas City Chiefs

Win: 17 - 10

Week 11

New York Jets

Win: 17 - 13

Week 12

@ San Diego Chargers

Win: 16 - 13

Week 13

@ Minnesota Vikings

Win: 35 - 32

Week 14

Chicago Bears

Win: 13 - 10

Let's face it, with the exception of Green Bay and Detroit, NONE of the teams we've played, and CERTAINLY none we've beat, are playoff contenders this year. And there hasn't been a single game that the Broncos dominated on offense. So, yeah, if/when we hit the playoffs, it will be because we're the luckiest team in the worst division of the AFC this year. Let's be honest about it. If Tebow were as great as everyone is stating, we wouldn't HAVE to claw back from behind in almost every freaking game.

So...we shall see on Sunday.

But I'm not going to make ANY bets with Carie, Selina, Robin, Alyson, Nellie, or Dave because I am not masochistic :P

(And, by some fluke if we WIN...I'll not post messages to any of them, either. I'm a football fan, not a jackass.)

THAT being said, I DO watch the game of pro football a LOT, so I'm positive we will lose, just as I was against GB. (Ask Ryan R if you don't believe me lol)

All that aside...GO BRONCOS.

THE Away Mission

Short post today, but, for me, a momentous one.

So, most of you probably know I love Firefly about like my friends Geoff and Carie like Star Wars, or Jye and Shawn like Star Trek.

Today I drove over to Orlando to meet Jewel Staite, known to Firefly fans (Browncoats) as Kaylee.

She is the first member of the cast I have gotten to meet thus far, and she was gracious enough to take a photo with me and sign one of my Firefly posters.
She's an amazing young lady and I got to chat with her a bit, and even got to question her in the public Q&A session, where she mentioned she "Finally Got the Guy" when I mentioned how I loved her and Sean Maher in their cameo episode of Warehouse 13, and that she "Is still waiting on a call from Castle" when I asked if Chuck or Castle had called her or if she would want to be on either show.

I also got to spend some time with John both in and out of the two panels he hosted on Firefly topics. The smartass even dedicated a #Tebowing to me before the first panel. I love how all my friends are sarcastic....definitely doesn't let things get boring! While at the panel, and throughout the day, I met and got to spend time with Maryann, a fellow geek and pretty cool lady in her own right!

Also, I of course managed to find an Orion Slave Girl to get a photo with for my Trekkers :P

That's all for me today folks........hope all of you had HALF as good a day as I did!

Welcome to Miami, Bien Venido a Miami

This past weekend, one of my oldest friends, Steve, and I went down to Miami to watch my Denver Broncos play his Miami Dolphins at Sun Life stadium.

We got to the Miami area around 10pm Saturday night, where we wandered around the suburbs for a bit looking for a motel. My GPS led us deep into the ghetto, then we turned around and found a place called the Melrose Park Motel, which was in Plantation, a place that the lodgings' owner was proud to point out was "The last southern bastion of white people until recently". He showed us around the cramped room, telling us that it had been Newly Renovated....then proceeded to pick a booger off the wall with his finger and state that the worthless maid must have missed one.

After nodding politely till he gave us the keys and left us alone, Steve and I started wondering if our KKK recruitment packages would be waiting outside the door for us in the morning.

That would turn out to be the least of our worries, as the window-unit air conditioner made a hell of a racket, which wouldn't have been so bad if it wouldn't have been for the fact that the damned thing would make a racket to raise the dead for 15 minutes, then be quiet for five or six before starting again.

We had to yell at each other just to be heard.

By about 2am, with many unsuccessful attempts at sleep, we were getting punchy.

Air Conditioner "Brrtrrrtttrrrraaaahhh."

Me: "I think I'm starting to hear secret codes in the buzzing."

Steve: "Hell, its been telling me to kill you for an hour now."

Eventually, we turned the fucking thing off and, on the paper thin sheets and blanket and stone-hard beds, finally got about an hour or so of sleep.

We left the mo-hell by 9am, grabbed breakfast at Dunkin just outside the stadium, and were among the early crowds by 10:00.

Sun Life Stadium, and the JumboTron promoting the game

Steve and I wandered around a bit, then headed into the stadium proper to watch the pregame warmups.

Matt Prater practices field goals. He would miss 2 of the 3 he attempted in the game.

Opening Ceremonies

For any football fans out there, you already know what happened.

For those that don't follow the sport, the Dolphins pounded on us like re-headed stepchildren until the game was 15-0 with about 5min to go in the fourth quarter. It was positive that both our teams were going to be 1-5 after this game and the Dolphins' first win would be against my beloved Broncos.

Then, my team remembered how to play football, scored a touchdown, kicked the extra point, recovered an onside kick, scored ANOTHER touchdown and our sophomore QB trotted into the endzone for a 2pt conversion. As time ran out on regulation, the score was 15-15, and we were headed to overtime.

Tebow chucks the ball......

.....and Demaryius Thomas hauls in the grab for the Broncos' first TD of the 4th QTR

The onside kick and recovery

Daniel Fells runs into the endzone for the 2nd Broncos TD of the 4th Qrtr

Tim Tebow takes it in for the 2pt conversion, tying the game

After some back and forth, Denver kicked a field goal to end the game and come away with a victory.

Prater makes the only FG that counts. In the second shot, the ball is, perhaps ironically, dead center in front of the guy in the Gators Tebow jersey.

And for Steve and I??? Yeah...we met the Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders ;)

да товарищ, я знаю, как говорить на русском языке. И очень хотелось бы плавать под их аппаратной

Ok, quick, go get the "Hunt for Red October" soundtrack and put it on.

Playing?

Turn it up. Sing along a little.

Good, NOW you're ALMOST ready to get your mind blown.

You remember a post here about Shaba, Psycho, and Valder possibly infiltrating a Soviet airbase?

Well......it happened.

Let me lay it down for you:

8 October 2011
1100hrs local
BFE, Texas.

Two cars, separated by twenty miles, drop off the interstate and take the poorly maintained back roads past burned pastures and light woods.

The lead car, a red Pontiac, holds the advance team of Psycho and Valder, who are scouting ahead for the white Chevrolet in trail. They had come in from different parts of two states for this meetup.

The men in the Pontiac had, the day before, laid down some prep work on the other side of the city, looking over some similar but older hardware.

Upon arriving at their destination, once they met up, the three men were confronted with a series of innocuous looking generic fold-front hangars lined up in a row. Once there, the three men are met by a mixture of former military personnel. Former Bulgarian, Polish, East German, and USSOCOM personnel, that is.

Once inside, the men were introduced to a host of Cold War-era Soviet Bloc aircraft, built in the USSR, Poland, and Czechoslovakia. Hopefully you'll enjoy the photos a fraction as much as the three men enjoyed learning about and looking over the aircraft themselves!

Dallas Days one and Two

Dallas, Day One

Thursday I flew from Orlando to Houston, which was fine, then from Houston to Dallas which was.....not so much. The flight gave me a whole new perspective on the early days of air travel, let’s put it that way. That puddle jumper (A Bombardier DHC-8-Q200 for those curious), was tiny, cramped, and, once the engines started, vibrating. The twin turboprops when at full song set off a harmonic vibration of the aircraft’s skin which was loud as all hell AND made the whole aircraft shake. I guess some people pay good money to get vibrated like that, but I’ll pass, thank you.

After landing at DFW, I wouldn’t say I ran from the plane….but I wouldn’t say I dallied, either.

(And just so you know, Sadie is my co-author on this post, so if it starts rambling about food and squirrels, I blame her).

Shawn met me at the airport, and we proceeded to goof off for a while, while waiting for Lisa’s flight to land about an hour later.

After picking up Lisa, we headed to the house, where Lisa did some work and we abandoned ship so as not to distract her too much.

So we headed downtown to Dealy Plaza.

Yeah, THAT Dealy Plaza.

I’ve read and watched a lot of the stuff on the assassination, and know the conspiracies, but……being on the ground gives you a whole new perspective.

I’m not saying Lee Harvey DIDN’T do it, I’m just saying the route, open-topped convertible, and going to Dealy at all was kind of a dumb move. There are SO many places to get a great line of sight while still maintaining concealment there. As you can see.

If you were curious, the reason there are no photos from inside the Texas Schoolbook Depository, now the sixth floor museum, is that they don’t allow photography inside. Which I kinda get, but at the same time….dammit.

Day Two

Nothing to see here, move along ;)

***ALERT*** ***ALERT*** ***ALERT***

We have learned through clandestine sources that three people associated with the 137th, The ETF, are planning to infiltrate a Soviet base sometime within the next week.

Unconfirmed reports state that Johnny "Psycho" Sechsen, Matthew "Shaba" Hunter and Aaron "Valder" Fieldman are the operatives involved.

More news as we get it, folks.

Shuffle away -- You won't find it.

If you were to find my iPod, you'd notice over 17,000 songs on there from 1200+ complete albums.
I love music, all types of music, and while people are always amazed by what they find IN the iPod, some people are more amazed by the albums they DON'T find.
Look all you want through it (it will take you a while), but you won't EVER find a single album by certain artists. Notably absent are the Beatles, Elvis, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Grateful Dead, NKOTB, Michael Jackson, Gaga, and Katy Perry. A lot of "One hit wonders" aren't there either. But for every one of those listed above, there's a specific reason, or in a couple cases a person, they will never be in my music collection. And why I don't listen to them if they come up on the radio, either. For the LAST three, it's because I just don't get them, plain don't like them, and, in Gaga's case, can't stand her voice. Oh, and they're all batshit nuts. ;)
Zep, Dead, and Floyd were faves of a few people I could never stand when i was younger, and that held over (old habits and all). The Beatles, much the same. A person I truly loathed (scratch that, thinking back, TWO people) played nothing BUT the Beatles on their home stereo or car. Again, ingrained response.

Elvis.....yeah, sorry. The man basically ripped off another whole culture's music and was hailed for it. Fuck that.

NKOTB.....two words. High School. Got WAY too over-exposed to them and just got sick of hearing them all the time. Don't HATE them, just don't need to hear them, lmao.

What about you guys, my blogstalkers? Any musical artists you choose to ignore?

I'm such a brat......

Having a great conversation with some fellow brats online tonight.

You kinda have to BE a brat to understand brats. We're....different. One of the only civilians I ever met that got close to getting it was Ben Mattix, and, not meant as an insult, brother, but he didn't fit in real well either.

A quick rundown on why Brats are so unique in this world, and why people often have a hard time understanding us: None of us understand the big hoopla about race/color/religion. We're outside the whole race/class issue. We "don't know any better".

One of the worst days of my life was the first day back at an American Public School seeing how little I fit in, since I didn't know there was a difference between white people, hispanic people, black people, gay people, female people, male people, smart people, athletic people, ect ect. My "ethnic" friends had it much worse, i know. At least when I moved back Stateside, it was to Nebraska. If I had moved straight to FL.....I'd probably have killed someone. Whole different level of ignorance around here.

As a brat, you don't have the time for that bullshit. Back when we were growing up, at the tail end of the Cold War, you moved every 18mo-2 years. You left your friends or they left you every other month it seemed.

You either learned how to adapt....or you went batshit nuts.

I think a few of us toed that line anyway.

I know a lot of people SAY their friends are like family.....Brats mean it.

We didn't have a choice, Dad (and in some cases mom) was always deployed and the other parent had to work, 'cause, let's face it, the military pays dogshit. So you met these other brats, instantly became close, and had the kind of friendships in a few months to a couple years that last lifetimes. Even now, if I run into another Brat, one I had never met before, we'll start talking like old friends.

And when I run into people I was stationed with (Make no mistake about it, Brats are in the military just as much as servicemen and their spouses, we just don't get the guns...most of the time ;) ), it's like nothing has changed.

(The town I lived in while stationed in Germany)

Moving back TO The USA was the biggest culture shock in my life......and I've wanted to leave every day since. I've yet to meet someone that was stationed overseas that doesn't feel the same. Hell, a couple of my CIVILIAN friends that have vacationed overseas even know what I'm talking about.

I'm often ashamed to call myself an American when I see the hatred, pettiness, and unfounded superiority complex displayed by so many in the American public today.

This, mind you, by a populace that, in all honestly, has less flexibility and useful education than almost any country on earth.

I mean, you all know the old joke "What do you call a person that speaks 3 languages? Trilingual. Two languages? Bilingual. Just one? American".

Truth hurts, and, for the "Greatest Country On Earth"....I just wish some days we'd (as a country) act it.

Instead of like a bunch of backwoods racist uneducated morons.....as we see in person and on the news all too often.

Sigh....I miss Europe. Rant over.

Class Act

Though I never got the chance to meet him when he played, Shannon Sharpe has always been one of the all-time great Broncos players, right up there with Elway, Smith, McCaffrey, Bailey, Atwater, Plummer, TD, and Elam, in my book. And last night, my respect for the man grew even more. If you didn't see Sharpe's HoF induction speech, here's the link for you: Shannon Sharpe's moving speech. I almost felt bad for Deion Sanders and Faulk for having to follow him. Mostly Deion. Faulk fell on his face on his own, if you ask me. Great player.....noooot so great a speaker. Also, WTH was up with Faulk and Deion being introduced by their AGENTS? I'm sorry, but to me, that's tacky and gives off the wrong message. So, to introduce you and speak of your virtues as a person and a player, you have....someone you PAY to talk about you. Um, what?

What did everyone else think of the Hall of Fame ceremonies last night?

Put Me In Coach

It has been the talk of the offseason.
The NFL CBA.
Someone asked me how I feel about it.
In a word??
Pissed.
This should have been decided long ago.
Players are asking for too much, and the people most negatively effected are the fans, who happen to pay for both owners and players, and without whom these people on BOTH sides of the talks would be unemployed.
What is truly needed in these talks is the FAN perspective as well. Because, lets face it, we are just as impacted by this as the owners and players, since we will be paying for these new agreements through ticket sales, merchandise, and concessions.
Seriously, the league minimum is in the range of $300,000 dollars a year.
I'll play CB/WR iron man football and get crushed by Reed for that amount.
Sign my ass up. One season and I don't have to work for almost TEN FUCKING YEARS.
Perspective, boys, that's all I'm asking for, OK?
Better men have done this job for much less and weren't primadonnas about it. Rod Smith. Ed McCaffrey. Jason Elam.
Players, man, men who loved the game, not the bling.
So, to the NFLPA.....unions are an idea of the past.
For the whiny bitch players that think they deserve a few more millions.
Grow the fuck up. And in some cases, learn the damned basics. Fundamentals. T.O., I'm looking at you, McDropperson.
Let's get this circus BS over with and get the season started.
And, yo, Bucs. Y'all need some help on WR or CB?
Put me in coach. I've seen Invincible. Let's do this shit.
But you gotta trade me to my Broncos in the offseason. Cause even I know the Buccaneers aren't where I'd wanna play.
Might have to pull a Plummer on ya if you try to keep me more than a season.

Thoughts, comments, arguments?

Nothing you know is true.

You all know I'm a pretty well read guy. Like my little brother, I LOVE reading. (He says he got it from me. I think he got the love of writing from me. Reading came from mom and dad). He and I also share another love, which he blogged about months ago on his 47 Echo blog.

I love fiction novels and books about historical events/people, but one of my favorite things to read about falls somewhere in the middle.

I'm a conspiracy theory nut. I don't believe in any of them, but I LOVE reading about them.

I have biographies on Billy the Kid. And then I have books stating Pat Garrett killed someone else.

I have every biography written about Amelia Earhart, and all three of the books she wrote.
I have even MORE books about how the Japanese shot her down, how she was an espionage agent, who she secretly flew to ANOTHER island and died in NJ in the 80s.

I have books by and about every member of the Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo crews.
And I have books stating we never went to the moon.

I have books on JFK and Oswald. Yeah....you know where THAT's going. Jim Garrison ring a bell? Got his books too.

I have volumes written about Lockheed and DARPA. Then I have Area51 books almost as numerous.

Did you know the Wright Brothers weren't the first to fly a heavier than air powered sustainable flight aircraft? Got books that prove it. Or say they do.

Bigfoot, Nessie, Champ, King Arthur. Fact or fiction?

9/11....let's not touch that one, shall we?

Now, I know what you're thinking.....We already knew you were nuts, but didn't know you liked to dance around the house in just a tin-foil hat.
(And if you didn't think that...I'm sorry for the visual image...but you shouldn't have wired the house with webcams ;) )

If you believe everything you read in conspiracy writings, than nothing you know is true. Nothing. Look at your neighbor. Alien. Boss? Genetic Hybrid. That's not JUST a light pole outside, that's a high-def camera and recording device as well.

So, why do I love my Conspiracy Theories??

Easy. I'm a fiction writer. I love looking at things from a different viewpoint, and Conspiracy Theories definitely do that.

So, what about you all, do you like Conspiracy Theories?? And if so, which is your favorite? My favorites are the ones that deal with Amelia Earhart. I know they're complete bunk, but they'd make for a fun fictionalization, and are a great "What If?".

And, after all, isn't that the point?

I ain't as good as I once was......

After two hours of basketball today, for the first time in years, I came face to face with a few facts. I'm nowhere near the athlete I once was.

Now, I was never a GREAT basketball player, let's put that out there right now. But I always enjoyed the game and I was far from the worst guy on the court.

I'm still one of the fastest guys on the court, hoop to hoop, and I'm still agile. My defense is still able to hold its own too.

But my offense......

Offensive. Let's just say I'm a lot more of a team player now. I can drain threes a bit still, and layups I'm still all over, but man.....I was missing that hoop like nobody's business today.

And, yeah, I can spout a ton of excuses, I'm 35, it's in the high 80s-low 90s and really humid, there was no shade, blah, blah, blah.

Truth is, I've just not been keeping up with the necessary skills to remain truly competitive. Damn life getting in the way, or maybe I've just been lazy.

Now, I suppose, the question is......what am I going to do about it??? ;)

Dun-Dun-Dah-nuhn-dun-dahnuh-dun-danah

Okay, if you know me at ALL, you know how excited the announcement of Star Wars Celebration VI makes me. (All info HERE)

Last year I had a hell of a time and met some truly amazing people that I am honored to have in my life. In the Facebook version of this post, you've been tagged.

Star Wars Celebration is more than just a convention, it's also an experience, as anyone who has ever been to one will tell you. So much so, I've already been talking to my boss from CV to work with the crew for CVI, lol.

I've also always loved the science of Star Wars, and have been known to create, in all modestly, some pretty good models of the ships from the Original Trilogy, and from some of my genre writing.

See??

Also working on a Slave 1 and Death Star Diorama at the moment.....

Oh, and I KNOW that THIS time my Jedi friend will make it down ;P. (And I'll probably drag the little Sith Messer too, bwahahaha)

And just 'cause I Can......GALACTIC EMPIRE STATE OF MIND!!!

Up on the Big Screen

Kind of a quick question for my friends out there.......and anyone else bored enough to answer, I suppose.

If you could make any book into a movie, what would be your top choice, and why??
Further, who would you cast in it?

Okay, while you chew on that one, my answers to it should be obvious by now. Especially since I already sort of answered it here: ETF Saga Movie Cast

If for some reason I couldn't do THAT......I would love to make either Weis and Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles or Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books into a truly kick-ass movie....or series of movies.

On a related note.......who would do the soundtrack?? For the ETF movie it would be Bon Jovi, LL Cool J, Journey, Halestorm, Third Knut, Public Enemy, and Mr Big, with some other guests. The official soundtrack album would be a triple disc set most likely, lol.

Hey, Hollywood......gimme some money already and let's get this going ;)

It's the End of the World as we Know it

So, apparently, the world is ending tomorrow.
I wouldn't even know anything about this if it weren't for people posting on it on Facebook and Twitter.
So, since we all know it's really NOT (I mean, I haven't even perfected my doomsday device yet)....how the hell did this crap get started this time??
(And for the record, I think I've lived through 3 "Apocalypses" already. 1983, 1994, 2000)

And, wouldn't the world be a better place if all the people that believed in it when people just go and say things without any form of quantitative proof just disappeared??? (Yes, I know that's skirting a very fine line with religion....I'll live with it.)

So, since I've heard very little about it, what is it this time? Plague, computer sentience, zombies?

Aircraft

I've loved aircraft since, well, I was able to know what one was. And I've been fortunate to get up close and personal with a great many famous and historic aircraft types over the years. About a decade ago, Ben and I decided to compile a list of all the aircraft we'd ever seen up close, and leave a special emphasis on those we have flown in....or taken the controls of. Here is my list as it stands today on the 28th of April, 2011. I have a feeling I've left something out.......
What about you.....Seen anything on this list....or maybe know of some good ones I haven't seen yet??
